“Nakauwi Na”, a short film by Communication alumni, was chosen as a Short Feature Finalist in the 2017 Cinemalaya Film Festival.

It will be screened, along with 11 other Short Feature nominees, on August 4 – 13 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and Ayala Cinemas.
Directed by Marvin Cabangunay and Jaynus Olaivar, “Nakauwi Na” follows the story of Mang Jerry, a simple jeepney driver doing everything he can, approaching anyone he can, just to raise funds so that he can get his son out of a funeral home. His son, Emman, was a victim of “extrajudicial killings”.

The short film, written by Carmela Canonizado and Angeli Manabat, was initially shown and was an official entry to Cinemaknights 2017, the annual film fest of Letran’s Communication seniors.

Other Letranites, who just graduated last April, that make up the team behind “Nakauwi Na” are Rose Cacho, Cathereen Calungsud, Cianel Dioneda, Morris Teodosio, Jason Juan, Sean Vergara, Ceejay Macatangga, Razelle de Guzman, Erica Caracta, Kiko Nones, Gene Jizmundo, Nicholle Demagante, Zyrel Reyes, Ann Gasmen, Bea Concepcion, and Chrisia Alviar.

Cinemalaya is an “all-digital film competition and festival that aims to discover, encourage, and support the cinematic works by Filipino filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity.” It is an initiative of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. and the CCP.

The winner of the Best Short Feature Film will be announced during the Awards Night on August 13.

In 2015, Communication graduate Jae-re Liwanag won second prize for the documentary, “Sukat”, in the 27th Gawad CCP, which was part of the 11th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.
